Marty Nau, saxophone, Robert Redd, piano, and Steve Novosel, acoustic bass, will perform jazz standards from the Great American Songbook during a Casual Concert at Glen Echo Park. The concert will last about an hour. Admission is free, and all donations support the artist. Families with children are encouraged to attend.

Marty Nau is a highly active and sought after jazz saxophone player in the Washington, D.C. area. Upon graduating from high school Marty enlisted in the Navy Music Program. After coming to the Washington DC area in 1980, he played with such big bands as the “Blues Alley Big Band”, Bill Potts Big Band Guy Lombardo, and others. He has performed with the National Symphony and Richmond Symphony and has backed up such performers as Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Daniels, Stanely Turrentine, Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Ethel Ennis, Nancy Wilson, Maureen McGovern, Snooky Young, and many others. He can be heard on the Navy Commodores CD recording “Here and Now”. After playing lead alto and conducting for the Navy Commodores, Marty retired from the Navy Band in 1997. Marty teaches jazz saxophone at Washington Conservatory of Music, Howard University and Sheridan School. Marty’s current freelance music activities include performing with the Baltimore Symphony, the Metropolitan Jazz Ensemble, the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra, and the Great American Music Ensemble, and leading the Marty Nau Quartet which has recorded three CDs under an independent label including the very well received “Strings Attached.” A Selmer clinician, Marty performs jazz improvising clinics at the high school and college level.
Robert Redd, piano, is a current member with The Duke Ellington Orchestra, performing throughout the U.S. and abroad. Most recent tours with the orchestra have included Japan, Israel and London. He was a member of the late Keter Betts trio for 13 years and continues to be pianist and leader for the Wolf Trap Jazz Trio which was started by Betts’. From 1995-1998, Robert was pianist and musical director for singer/songwriter Kenny Rankin. He performs often with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and worked frequently as a member of the Charlie Byrd Trio, and appears on Charlie’s last recording, “For Louis”. Robert can be heard on numerous recordings and is also a QRS recording artist, having recorded two piano rolls for the New York-based company. Recent recordings include “Bouquet Chorale” (Summit Records) featuring Marty Nau and legendary saxophonist Phil Woods and “When Redd is Blue”, co-led with his brother, Chuck. He is a featured artist every year at the W.C. Handy Music Festival in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Robert is also a member of the Brooks Tegler Trio, which performs every Sunday evening at The Irish Inn in Glen Echo, Md., one of the longest running jazz gigs in the Washington D.C. area. He has performed with John Pizzarelli, Houston Persons, Melba Moore, James Moody, Oscar Castro-Nevis, Warren Vache, Harry James Band and the Artie Shaw Band, to name a few.
Legendary bassist Steve Novosel has performed, recorded, and/or toured with a veritable Who’s Who of Jazz over the last half-century, including Milt Jackson, Bobby Hackett, Al Grey, Eddie Vinson, the Red Norvo Trio, Charlie Byrd, Elvin Jones, James Moody, Slide Hampton, Blue Mitchell, Harry Sweets Edison, Eddie Lockjaw Davis, and vocalists Billy Eckstine, Betty Carter, Mavis Rivers, Shirley Horn and Anita O’Day among countless others. He has more than 60 recordings to his name and is a faculty member of Washington Conservatory of Music.
