The subtleties, expressions and large palette of sound color, are so much greater on a wonderful concert grand, than on pianos of lesser responsiveness and quality” – Dionne Laufman, WCM Co-Founder, Pianist
Piano accompaniments on a concert grand piano have elevated the sound and quality of my son’s performances. – Elisabeth Currie-Edwards, mother of violin student
For a professional musician, a fine concert grand piano tremendously enhances performances of the rich wealth of chamber music literature. – Tobias Werner, Artistic Director, Cellist, Pressenda Chamber Players
There is no greater thrill for a young pianist than playing on a quality concert grand piano. The tonal palette and harmonic detail of a fine concert grand is inspiring and expands their sense of what’s musically possible.
– Tammany Kramer & Sean Iyer, parents of piano student
Dear WCM Families,
A childhood riddle asks what has eighty-eight keys but cannot open a single door. The answer is a piano, but we are sure you would agree a fine grand piano can open an infinite number of doors to the hearts, minds and imagination of people of all ages. Today, we are announcing a unique effort in our school’s history – “The Concert Grand Month of May” – and we are hoping you will join us as we open musical doors together with the purchase of an exceptional concert grand piano.
Over 20 years ago, WCM was fortunate to acquire a beloved Blüthner concert grand piano. Unfortunately, concert grands such as these have roughly a twenty-year life before needing to be replaced or to undergo a year of expensive rebuilding. As we now find ourselves with this dilemma, we have made a difficult yet exciting decision. Like other esteemed music venues in DC, we have commissioned Piano Craft of Gaithersburg to create for us a completely rebuilt Steinway 9-foot concert grand piano.
Though we planned for this day, we did not foresee this purchase coinciding with the challenges and financial strains brought by the pandemic. Therefore, we are asking for your help with this critical purchase in the school’s history.
Whether you are a parent, student, teacher, concert-goer or music supporter, we know you appreciate how critical a high-quality concert grand piano is to all facets of our Conservatory life – to attract and stimulate our wonderful teachers, to celebrate and enjoy our students in their recitals and to enrich and expand our longstanding community concert series.
We recognize many have already generously given to our annual holiday appeal. These gifts are much appreciated as they help keep our operations running every year and are critical to keeping our doors open. This appeal is different. This one-time effort is targeted exclusively at the purchase of this grand piano and is a direct investment in the next 20+ years of the Conservatory’s future.
We want to put your name on our Piano Appreciation Plaque, or perhaps add a name in honor or memory of your loved one or favorite teacher. Each gift of $300 or more will be engraved on the plaque with our gratitude. These $300 “key gifts” also sound beautiful in octaves of eight or other leadership levels, but whatever you can give at any level will be much appreciated and directly contributes to making beautiful music not just today but for years to come.
Please use the above Donation button or send a check to WCM. If you prefer, please call our office with a credit card: 301-320-2770.
Thank you for considering this valuable one-time tax-deductible investment in the Washington Conservatory’s future. Let’s make music together!
With appreciation,
The Washington Conservatory of Music Board of Directors
