About Washington Conservatory of Music
The Washington Conservatory of Music (WCM) is one of only fifteen nonprofit community music schools in the U.S. accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Precollegiate Arts Schools (ACCPAS). Located in historic Glen Echo Park, MD, WCM provides lessons and group classes to students of all ages, year-round, with a faculty of outstanding performing artists. Founded in 1984, WCM presents free community concert series, a free monthly concert series at retirement communities, and free music classes to children of immigrant and underserved families in Washington, DC and Montgomery County, MD through the Tapestry Music Outreach Program.
Position Summary
Washington Conservatory of Music seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and passionate early childhood music instructor to join our team. The successful candidate will lead group classes for children ages 4 months to 6 years, foster a joyful, engaging learning environment, and support WCM’s mission to make music education accessible to all.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Teach early childhood group music classes
- Using developmentally appropriate and musically rich activities.
- Lead group singing and movement activities confidently and unaccompanied, modeling healthy vocal technique and musicality.
- Engage parents and caregivers as active participants in class.
- Adapt instruction to meet the needs of children from a variety of cultural and developmental backgrounds.
- Maintain attendance records and provide feedback to parents and the WCM education team as needed.
- Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum development, special events, and community performances.
- Participate in faculty meetings and professional development sessions as requested.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Music, Early Childhood Education, or Music Education (Master’s preferred).
- Significant training and experience teaching infants, toddlers, and young children in a group setting.
- Pleasant proactive approach to class management
- Ability to sing and lead classes confidently in an appropriate range for young children.
- Experience working with diverse populations and students with a range of abilities.
- Excellent communication skills and a warm, professional demeanor.
- A collaborative spirit and willingness to be part of a supportive faculty team.
Compensation
Hourly group teaching rate begins at $55/hour and is commensurate with experience.
