About Washington Conservatory of Music
The Washington Conservatory of Music (WCM) is one of only fifteen nonprofit community music schools in the U.S. accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Precollegiate Arts Schools (ACCPAS). Located in historic Glen Echo Park, MD, WCM provides private lessons, group classes, and ensembles for students of all ages, year-round, with a faculty of outstanding performing artists. Founded in 1984, WCM also presents free community concert series, monthly performances at retirement communities, and free music classes to children of immigrant and underserved families in Washington, DC and Montgomery County, MD through the Tapestry Music Outreach Program.
Position Summary
Washington Conservatory of Music seeks an engaging, skilled, and dedicated guitar instructor to join our faculty. The successful candidate will teach private lessons (beginner through advanced levels) and may have opportunities to lead group classes or ensembles. We are seeking a teacher who inspires students of all ages, fosters a supportive and motivating learning environment, and supports WCM’s mission to make high-quality music education accessible to all.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Teach private guitar lessons to students of varying ages and skill levels.
- Develop individualized lesson plans tailored to student goals, abilities, and interests.
- Incorporate a range of styles (classical, jazz, rock, folk, etc.) depending on expertise and student interest.
- Encourage creativity, proper technique, and musicianship in all lessons.
- Prepare students for recitals, juries, auditions, and community performances.
- Communicate progress and goals clearly with students and parents.
- Collaborate with faculty on student placement, events, and curriculum initiatives.
- Participate in faculty meetings and professional development sessions as requested.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Guitar Performance, Music Education, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Strong performing ability and significant teaching experience (private or group).
- Ability to teach multiple styles and levels, from beginners through advanced students.
- Excellent communication skills with administration, patience, and enthusiasm for working with students of all ages.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming studio environment.
- A collaborative spirit and willingness to be part of a supportive faculty team.
Compensation
Hourly private teaching rate begins at $50/hour and is commensurate with experience.
