The art of Opera combines performing and visual arts in a powerful way that can greatly reinforce both oral and written language arts skills. In this highly interactive class, participants will work together to develop their own mini–operatic version of a familiar story or portion of it. Through the creative process of combining music, drama, movement, and visual arts to create the opera or opera scene, participants will deepen their understanding of story structure, sequencing, creative writing, and vocabulary.
Since the art of Opera is essentially a combination of the arts, this class also serves as a great introduction to the performing arts through hands-on experiences within a safe and collaborative environment. The expansive use of imagination and critical problem-solving will be addressed as students collaborate in “making the story their own” by modifying specific aspects of the story, such as the ending, setting, or characters.
Critical life skills such as listening, self-regulation, cooperation, and teamwork will start to become second nature as students discover how exciting it can be to share a story through basic elements of opera!
For the final session, participants will wear costume pieces and present their opera
story through music, acting, and dance to an audience of families and friends.
